[EN] MIDIOLA is a mobile app that pays homage to music rolls for early 20th century player pianos. With our program, digitized music rolls from the collection Deutsches Museum Munich can be played back with your cellphone. Rolls can also be scanned with the cellphone camera to create music on the spot. It is our aim is to put the obsolete medium of the Pianola music roll back on the map. The historic technology should be made accessible to a broader public and be experienced in an audio-visual installation.

The software was created by a four person team with a background in coding, design and art history (Luca Beisel, Tom Brewe, Joscha Lausch, Mohammad Moradi). As an entry for the Coding DaVinci 2015 hackathon for open cultural data it won the prize for “Best Design”.

[DE] MIDIOLA ist eine Smartphone-App, die sich Notenrollen für selbstspielende Klaviere aus dem frühen 20. Jahrhundert widmet. Mit unserer Software können die digitalisierten Notenrollen aus der Sammlung Deutsches Museum München abgespielt werden. Vorhandene Notenrollen lassen sich auch mit der Handykamera abfilmen, um damit live zu musizieren. Unser Ziel ist es, dem antiquierten Medium der Pianola-Notenrollen zu einer neuen Aktualität zu verhelfen. Die historische Technik soll für eine breite Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht und als audiovisuelles Ereignis erfahrbar werden.

Hinter MIDIOLA steht ein vierköpfiges Team aus Programmierern, Designern und Kunsthistorikern (Luca Beisel, Tom Brewe, Joscha Lausch, Mohammad Moradi). Die Software entstand für Coding DaVinci 2015, den Hackathon für offene Kulturdaten. MIDIOLA gewann dort den Preis in der Kategorie “Best Design”.
